Catalonia: language, culture and society (90 h)

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the language and culture of Catalan society, so that they can gain basic language and cultural skills. Students will be taught practical notions of Catalan language, as well as general information on culture and society: the traditional fiestas in Catalonia, the customs and distinguishing characteristics of this autonomous community, which has its own language and culture.

Learn Catalan culture with this course from the University of Barcelona. It analyzes differential characteristics of this autonomous community. 

METHODOLOGY

Each session will include a presentation of the topic based on a power point that the students will study and prepare, to then share it with the group and complete its definition or clarification with the help of the lecturer. Students will be expected to participate actively.

SYLLABUS

• Introduction. Geography of Catalonia  

• Short history of Catalonia. 

• Basic structures of Catalan language.  

• Traditional fiestas: sardanas, castellers, gegants and capgrossos.  

• Montserrat and popular piety.  

• The family and family relations in Catalonia. La pubilla and l’hereu beauty pageant.  

• The National Day of Catalonia (La Diada): 11 of September.  

• All Saints' Day: chestnuts and panellets.  

• Jacinto Verdaguer: the prince of Catalan poets.  

• Christmas: Santa Lucía Christmas fair, the caganer, and the Tióde Nadal.  

• Symbols of Catalonia: the flag, the hymn, the emblem.  

• Eating in Catalonia: vocabulary, markets, typical dishes: escudella (pasta soup) and carn d’olla (eat stew), crema catalana (Catalan custard).  

• Basic notions of Catalan: how to ask practical questions.  

• Sant Jordi, the book and the rose. Catalan writers. 

• The great artists: Gaudí, Dalí, Miró.  

• Catalan music: The nova cançómovement, Catalan rumba and Catalan rock.  

• The night of San Juan: bonfires, fireworks and the coca de San Juan pastry.  

• Pompeu Fabra: father of the modern Catalan language  

• Catalans returning with fortunes from the Americas, habanera dances and cremat punch.  

• Fiestas and Catalan legends.
