Spanish art, from the greatness of its architecture to the richness of its painting, has already left an indelible mark on World cultural history.  

The aim of this course is to provide an overview of the main expressions of art in the Iberian Peninsula, from its origins to the present day. We will study major monuments such as Romanesque churches, gothic cathedrals or modernist buildings, as well as the main painters and sculptors, including El Greco, Velázquez, Murillo, Goya, Picasso or Dalí. 

Minimum level of Spanish language required: From Intermediate

METHODOLOGY

Each session will include a presentation of the topic based on a power point. Students will be expected to participate actively. The class will be complemented by visits to the city's main monuments and museums.

• Islamic art: the Mezquita of Córdoba, the Bell Tower of Seville and the Alhambra of Granada.  

• Romanesque in the Iberian Peninsula. The Camino de Santiago.  

• Painting and Romanesque sculpture. National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC): the most important collection of Romanesque painting in the world.  

• The great gothic cathedrals. Catalan gothic: Santa María del Mar.  

• Painting and gothic sculpture.  

• The architecture of the Renaissance. El Escorial: palace, basilica and pantheon of the kings of Spain.  

• Renaissance sculpture and painting.  

• El Greco.  

• The golden age of Spanish art: architecture and the Baroque imaginary.  

• The great Baroque painters: Ribera, Zurbarán, Velázquez, Murillo.  

• Francisco de Goya, the first modern painter.  

• Neoclassicism: architecture, sculpture and painting 

• Romanticism.  

• Historical painting.  

• Impressionism in Spain.  

• Modernisme: Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner, Puig i Cadafalch.  

• Pablo Ruiz Picasso.  

• Salvador Dalí: Surrealism.  

• Joan Miró.
